Many of you have helped our friends in Chimbote with your prayers and finances. Now, you can actually travel to Chimbote to meet the many people who have benefited from your generosity.
Our upcoming trip will take place:
August 12th-19th, 2025
(typically more moderate weather)
Information Nights for our upcoming trip are March 25th and May 8th at 7:00 p.m. at the Parish Office.
Deadline for registering for this trip is May 16th
If you have any questions in the meantime, please visit with one of the many people who have already gone to Chimbote. Or you can call or email Randy Althoff at 612.210.0873, [email protected], or Shirley Gengler at 612.387.5236, [email protected].
However, we will also gladly accept individual items for any of the three projects.
We will be handing out backpacks in July. Again, sticking to the exact list helps us get the backpack through customs. We appreciate the backpacks being turned in by late August. Items will be shipped on the container in the early fall so any containers for the three projects or loose individual items should be turned in by late August to early September to give us a chance to check, sort, and pack.
As you are all aware, Fr. Tom is quite passionate about the good work that our parish has been doing in Chimbote, Peru. Helping to build homes for those in need in Chimbote has had an impact on him and it can have an impact on you too. You can be part of this mission by donating to the St. Michael Homes Campaign. About $7,000 buys a home. Maybe you can team up with some friends and neighbors to fund a home. $2,300 provides 1 month of meals for 200 people at the mission kitchen. $100 can provide furniture for a family in need. A little money also goes a long way in funding educational opportunities!

What difference does a new home make for a family? This video shows the basics of how we build houses that will provide a safe and clean home for families that will last 25 years or more.
In 1996, the Church of St. Michael became a sister parish to Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Perpetua Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help), a poverty-stricken parish with over 30,000 members located in Chimbote, Peru. Chimbote is located on the Pacific Ocean six hours north of Lima, and numbers about 400,000 residents. The main industries are fishing and steel. The parish is located in one of the poorest sections of the city.
Through the generosity of parishioners, we conduct two campaigns a year to support the mission. Our School in a Bag Campaign, held in August/September, which assists with the general educational needs of families. In early Spring, we have a Homes Campaign to raise funds to build homes and provide basic residential needs. In addition to these campaigns, the parish sends a shipping container full of items including clothing, tools, and wheelchairs.
St. Michael works directly with an organization called Friends of Chimbote which is a US-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Fargo. It is responsible for the governance, global advocacy, and fundraising needed to sustain the life-changing mission programs and services in Chimbote now and into the evolving future.
