Baptism

What is the Sacrament of Baptism?

Baptism is the first of seven sacraments and the “door” which opens a person to the other sacraments. It is the first sacrament of forgiveness because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose to give us new life. Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist constitute the “sacraments of initiation” by which a believer begins a new life in Christ and the Holy Spirit and is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ. The Rite of Baptism consists in immersing the candidate in water, or pouring water on the head, while pronouncing the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Infant Baptisms at St. Michael

At the Church of St. Michael we baptize twice a month, usually on the first and third Sundays following the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Baptisms are not celebrated during Lent. Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for their children should be registered members of this parish and are required to attend a baptism class (Baptism I or II) prior to the baptism date. Godparents are also welcome to participate in theses baptism programs.

BeFriender Ministry would like to welcome your new little one to our parish community with a gift. To schedule your gift delivery, please call Deacon Dick at 952-447-2491.

If you would like to have your infant child baptized at St. Michael, please read our Baptism Baptism Policy and Procedures document for more information. Call the Parish Office at 952-447-2491 to register for a baptism class and to get a current schedule of baptism dates.

Baptism Classes

Baptism I Program
A Baptism I class is required for parents who want to have their first child baptized or for anyone who has not already completed a basic preparation program at another parish. Baptism I classes are offered on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Godparents are also welcome to attend.

Baptism II Program
Baptism II is a distinct program for parents who have completed the Baptism I program at St. Michael or a basic preparation program at any parish and now wish to have another child baptized. The main purpose of this second program is to discuss with parents some practical advice about sharing their Catholic faith with very young children. The class is offered on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Office.
